13 Reasons Why Classical Music is Essential for Every Music Student

Throughout life, we face the choice between choosing something good or choosing something better. Sometimes the option is simply a matter of perception. A person in a grocery store can buy the good, generic brand of cereal, or the better, brand-name cereal, but the difference in quality is small, if at all noticeable.

At other times the choice between good and better is real. A friend once purchased a used car that had no passenger seat. It was all she could afford, but it was not the best car available. Often, the choice between good and better involves money.

With music, we have the choice between good and better, and thankfully, it usually does not cost us anymore for the better option. If you are reading this post, you likely know that we think classical music is better than a lot of music we have available. There are many reasons for this belief, but we are not too quick to dismiss other genres. There is Rock that falls in the better category and some that resides within the good. An example is The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s album. This album was a success because of its quality and is an example of the band’s genius.

Similarly, we cannot place all classical music in the better category as well. However, time (hundreds of years in some cases) has weeded out many of the works that are not worth our attention.

All this said, we have reason to tune our ears to classical music as it is truly a choice of what is better over what is merely good. When we engage our ears (and minds) with the best things possible, it makes a difference in our lives, and we gain the ability to perceive good from better in other areas of decision making. This is an important life skill and something we want to teach our kids.

Finally, here is a list of reasons why classical music will only enrich your life and not impair you with cheap amusement.

  1. Classical Music has a higher level of refinement and detail than most other genres of music.

  2. Classical Music enjoys more variety in nearly every aspect, sound, form, instrumentation, style, etc.

  3. Classical Music encompasses a more exhaustive range of emotions than other genres, and it helps us connect to deeper parts of our soul.

  4. Classical Music takes the listener beyond one’s self and exposes them to thoughts and ideas throughout history and culture.

  5. Classical Music improves one’s listening skills in all things.

  6. Classical Music engages different parts of the brain at the same time, allowing us quicker reasoning skills.

  7. Classical Music relieves stress

  8. Classical Music can reduce pain

The above reasons or enough for anyone to take up the challenge and enjoy classical music regularly, but music students gain even more. Here are five more reasons why every music student should be listening to classical music.

  1. For Music Students

    1. Listening to classical music helps students us notice details in music

    2. Listening to classical music trains students to hear musical form

    3. Listening to classical music helps students intuitively understand harmony

    4. Listening to classical music helps students adopt good phrasing/style/articulation because we play or sing like we hear it in recordings

    5. Listening to classical music inspires us to do our best

Listening to classical music is one part of what we are talking about, but we also know that learning to play an instrument or train our voice to sing with technique is the other part students need.
